New Brunswick started as a ferry crossing in 1686 in Middlesex county. With having a good sea port and water power from the Raritan River by the 1750s it was a center of commerce for shipping and milling. New Brunswick is also home to Rutgers University that dates back to the 1700's.

Woodbridge was founded in 1666 by followers of the reverend John Woodbridge, a Puritan minister from Connecticut. Piscataway was also settled by Puritans, some from Woodbridge and others from Piscataqua in Connecticut. Witchcraft was considered a capital offense in both towns, but there is no record of any accusations occurring.

The Delaware and Raritan Canal from Bordentown to New Brunswick occasionally transported more cargo on an annual basis than the more famous Reie Canal. Completed in 1834, it was primarily used to haul coal from Pennsylvania. It is 43 miles long, 75 feet wide and is used today for recreation only.

The very first intercollegiate football game was played at Rutgers University on November 6, 1869. Rutgers beat Princeton six goals to four, in a game with a round ball and 25 men to a side. Thomas A. Edison moved his invention laboratory to Menlo Park in 1876. His inventions included the phonograph, automatic telegraph, and incandescent light bulb.
