Its county seat is Trenton, the state capital. The county is named for Continental Army General Hugh Mercer, who died as a result of wounds received at the Battle of Princeton on January 3, 1777. Mercer County is home to Princeton University, Princeton Theological Seminary, the Institute for Advanced Study, Rider University, The College of New Jersey, Thomas Edison State College and Mercer County Community College.
"Patriot's Week", which takes place the last week in December and includes the reenactment of Washington's famous crossing of the Delaware has come to be known as a "must see" for history enthusiasts. Couple this with traveling the "Victory Trail" from Trenton to Princeton, and all of the sites along the way, and you will feel as though you were thrust back in time. This region is certainly a leisure destination to both visitors as well as residents.
